CABLEtalk - August 2008

It’s a special Health and Safety issue this month, as we address one of the most pressing matters affecting the industry. We have H&S themed articles, features and opinion pieces.

Our cover story is a special interview with Dr Paul Stollard, the new HSE Director in Scotland. Dr Stollard talked to Georgia Love about his ambitions for the future of HSE in Scotland, and his to spend less time on fatal accident investigations and more time on promotion and education. By these means and by sharing best practice he intends to reduce the amount of workplace accidents in Scotland. Ultimately the HSE will be more proactive and less reactive.

Dr Stollard also debunks some of the ridiculous ‘elf and safety’ myths and misunderstandings that frequently crop up both in the mind of the public and in the popular press, including banning sword dancing at Highland Games, to name just one.

There’s an invaluable in-depth article on fire risk assessment and the recent changes in responsibility for fire safety by renowned expert Dr Eric Marchant.

We also have a thought-provoking opinion piece on the serious issue of migrant workers and H&S. How much of a liability on construction sites, and are they involved in proportionately more accidents than local workers?

There are also special features on fire resistant cabling, software, and of course our usual lively and informative mix of news, views and advice. Plus a round-up of all the latest products and tools.
